Devon is surrounded by amazing scenery and great things to do. Here are some of our favourite activities.
A short stroll from Kingswear Park will transport you to Kingswear where the Dart Valley steam train operates a “Round Robin” service to Paignton. From there you can then travel by open-top bus to historic Totnes, where you finally board a river cruiser which will take you to Dartmouth. A short ferry returns you to Kingswear. A perfect day out for all the family. If you prefer to walk, a picturesque coastal footpath that winds 8 ½ miles will take you to the quaint fishing village of Brixham, with endless country lanes, beaches and coves to explore around every corner.
Just a few minutes’ ferry ride away from Kingswear is the naval port of Dartmouth where you will find a world of narrow streets, ancient houses and a relaxed atmosphere straight out of a bygone era. The Royal Britannia Naval College, Bayards Cove and Dartmouth Castle at the mouth of the river, are just a few of the attractions to explore, along with another coastal footpath that takes you to Salcombe. The beautiful beach of Blackpool Sands is not to be missed. Nearby too (by river or road) is the Elizabethan town of Totnes, full of historic reminders of a romantic age, with the whole surrounding area rich in local crafts.
To the north of Dartmouth and Totnes lies the grandeur of the Dartmoor National Park which beckons the more adventurous visitor for extensive walking and pony trekking. For the more sedate visitor there is the ever changing scenery of the River Dart as it meanders from Totnes through the rolling hills of South Hams to the Dart estuary .
Nearby National Trust properties include the gardens of “Greenway” (Agatha Christie’s former residence) and “Coleton Fishacre” the former home and gardens of the D’Oyly Carte family together with the extensive National Trust coastal walks.
Boat trips are available locally, both for sightseeing and sea fishing enthusiasts.
Golf is available at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club and nearby Churston Golf Club.
Further afield, attractions and places of interest will be found at: Exeter 45 minutes; Plymouth 40 minutes; Totnes 20 minutes; Torquay 15 minutes; Brixham 7 minutes.
